Juan De Fuca Trail
Hiking along the west coast of Vancouver Island
Juan De Fuca Trail
Trail break down:
The hike took us 3 days, which included 2 nights of camping and 3 days of hiking on trails ranging from medium to difficult. The difficult trails were pretty much climbing up and down, to allow for each bridge that crossed the estuaries. As the area is heavily forested, the path is narrow and had an abundance of roots to climb over. Thankfully we got 0 rain so we were able to remain dry throughout (apart from the occasional trench foot).
As part of the treck we hit the following beaches, with 2 overnights camping by the shore.
Beach | Distance |
---|---|
Bear Beach (Overnight) | 8.7 |
Chin Beach - East | 20.6 |
Chin Beach - West | 21.3 |
Sombrio Beach - East (Overnight) | 28.0 |
Sombrio Beach - West | 29.6 |
Sombrio Beach - West-west | 30.2 |
Interestingly, this trail is a really popular one for spectacular views of the Olympic Mountains in Washington (USA). However, 2021 brought us a heatwave and with it plenty of forest fires, which explains the haziness of most of the shoreline pictures. At most times you could barely see the sun, this did not take away from a lovely experience.
